Sarah Ball remembers when her father bought a pool table to fill space in the family’s new home in 2017. She had no idea where he bought it from, and she never imagined that one day she would become part-owner of the business.
Sarah Ball, along with her parents Melissa and Jonathan Ball, purchased Richmond-based indoor gaming furniture supplier CP Dean Co. from William Selden V in September 2021. Melissa Ball has owned and operated her adjoining commercial furniture and supply business, Ball Office Products. The Balls also purchased the building on Westmoreland Street that housed both businesses.
CP Dean, a 138-year-old company started in 1886 by Charles Preston Dean, expanded to Chesapeake in February. The company opened his 3,700 square foot showroom, workshop and warehouse at 1244 Executive Blvd. At the Greenbrier. This location primarily focuses on selling billiard tables, shuffleboard tables, darts, and residential and commercial game room furniture.
Chesapeake store manager Stephen Emory said the store sells top-of-the-line cues and accessories at affordable prices. CP Dean has exclusive rights to sell Olhausen and Legacy Billiards billiard tables and other game room products in this region.
This business brings old billiard tables back to life with billiard table maintenance such as new cloth and replacement rubber. CP Dean is also known for the plaques, trophies, acrylic, and crystal awards we create using our engraving and sublimation presses.
Sarah Ball, 25, has been busy learning about all aspects of business ownership, including cue repair and laser cutting awards.
“I was in the political fundraising world…but I saw the writing on the wall that politics might not be something I wanted to do full-time forever,” she said. Told. “It’s much easier to sell a product than it is to sell a candidate.”
She respects the knowledge and expertise of several CP Dean employees who have been in the business for 40 years.
“Installing a pool table is a craftsman’s job,” says Sarah Ball. “This is a skilled trade and you have to learn.”
Ball said the Hampton Roads store has had a significant amount of walk-in business since opening, and CP Dean has seen significant growth. She said 90 percent of the pool tables are sold to residential customers.
“People want a place where they can touch and feel a cue stick without having to go to the Amazon,” she said.
Customers in the store can also feel the cue stick to see if it’s warped, choose their preferred grip and weight, or try it out on a pool table, she said.
“And it’s fun to see people excited to buy fun things,” she said.
