If you’ve been to a grocery store like Whole Foods (AMZN), Target (TGT), or Sprouts (SFM) recently, you’ve seen Omsom, an emerging packaged Asian food brand, on the shelves. You may have seen it before. The company was founded by the daughters of Vietnamese refugees and was launched in May 2020 during the pandemic. Their second daughter, Vanessa Pham, who is now the brand’s CEO, was just 24 years old when they started the business.
Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter Brooke DiPalma sat down with Pham to dig deeper into what it takes to lead a new company at such a young age. The CEO offers his three tips for new entrepreneurs.
“The first thing is to focus on your strengths instead of focusing on your weaknesses,” Pham says.

Brooke DiPalma: What are your top three tips for new entrepreneurs or people looking to make their big break like you?
Vanessa Pham: I think the first thing is to rely on your strengths instead of focusing on your gaps. I think it’s by actually focusing on what we do best that we truly unlock our deepest power and potential. The second thing is to understand that this is going to be an incredibly challenging personal journey, and to normalize and prepare for it. It prepares you to build self-awareness and question the narratives inside you that aren’t working.
And the final piece is being willing to act as a leader. Keep an open mind, be inspired and feel it whether it’s the best or the worst. So as a leader, I try not to be like Harden. And I think that’s how you unleash your power to energize others.
