GROVE CITY – A World War II pilot and longtime Grove City resident celebrated his 100th birthday last week at Grove Manor Nursing Home.
Robert “Bob” Robson was born in Grove City in 1924 and has lived here all his life. His birthday was spent with his family, friends and former neighbors from before he moved into an assisted living center.
Robson’s military career began in 1943 in the Cadet Air Corps. He served there until 1946. During that time, he had many responsibilities, including training and transporting paratroopers and transporting medical evacuations.

“He taught me perfectly clearly about all the aircraft. Very specific things from a very long time ago. It wasn’t just his planes, he knew something about all of them. ” Keith Flowers, Robson’s former neighbor, said during Tuesday’s party. “He also told me a story. He flew over Yugoslavia while Tito was in power.”
Outside the military, Robson served an apprenticeship that began in 1942 and ended in 1947. He worked in the locomotive industry.
He also met the love of his life, Doris, while in the military.
“His stories are some of my favorites,” said Alison Flowers, a former neighbor. “It started when he went to an international country for the first time. He just wanted someone to talk to and sent letters to different people.”
When Mr. Robson sent these letters, he initially received no response. He thought no one would react. Three months later, the delivery arrived. It turned out that the letter had been backloaded. Doris had sent 14 letters to talk to Robson. From that moment on, he knew she was the one for him.
Doris was also in the Navy. They were married on December 22, 1945. She passed away in 2010.
They had two sons, Robert Robson Jr. and William Robson. Bob now has many grandchildren.
His party was filled with conversation, cake and ice cream. Robson was in good health and talked about his past. After all, the day had exhausted him.
“I’m ready to lie down,” Robson said. “But it’s great to see everyone come together for this.”
