Japanese baseball player Shohei Otani recently made headlines after signing a 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a total of $700 million. The deal gave him the largest contract in American team sports history.
Since Major League Baseball’s inception, some executives and players have challenged the concept of a salary cap. However, many of these owners were funding their teams through other revenue avenues. Additionally, major league owners like Ewing Marion Kaufman, founder of the Kansas City Royals, believe in giving back.
At age 33, Kaufman left Lincoln Laboratory and single-handedly founded Marion Laboratories, which he grew into a billion-dollar company. His entrepreneurial journey mirrors that of many entrepreneurs (minus the “billion dollar company” part).

break down economic barriers
One Million Cups was established in 2012 through the Ewing Marion Kaufman Foundation. According to its website, 1 Million Cups works to change conditions, address root causes and break down barriers so that all people have the opportunity to achieve financial security, mobility and prosperity. That’s what I’m aiming for. .

1 Million Cups is active in over 100 communities and has over 22,000 participating entrepreneurs.
Communities across the country come together every Wednesday to share ideas, gather resources, and collaborate. 1 Million Cups has his five communities across North Carolina: Fayetteville, Asheville, Lake Norman, Robeson County, and Wilmington.
Fayetteville’s Million Cup Community
The Fayetteville Million Cup community meets on the campus of Fayetteville Technical Community College. Every Wednesday, business management instructor and advisor Lori Register leads a group of entrepreneurs who think collaboratively. We’ll be inviting guest speakers to share their entrepreneurial journey and wealth of knowledge.
The latest guest speaker to attend the Fayetteville 1 Million Cup Conference was Jennifer Fry, founder of Appreciated Asset. Appreciated Asset is a business consulting firm that helps connect businesses and resources to increase sales.
“What got you here isn’t going to take you to the next stage,” Frye says.
Network: Share ideas and resources
Entrepreneurs have innovative ideas, but often lack the resources to turn those ideas into businesses. 1 Million Cups is designed to build the founder’s network of peers.
Members of the Fayetteville community range from commercial service providers to medical professionals. One of the most notable members of the Fayetteville Million Cup community is newly elected Hope Mills Mayor Jesse Bell Flowers.
