John Yoo, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, was invited to donate his annual salary (about $500,000) to the Guantanamo Survivors Fund, which has raised $92,000 so far. Professor Yu has tenure and has been honored with an endowed chair in the law school. The Survivors Fund aims to support released former Guantanamo prisoners who were tortured and detained without charge for up to 14 years. Former prisoners need medical care, rent, language classes, tuition, and job training to survive, but when they are released from Guantanamo by the U.S. government, they are given nothing, and when they are handed over to Guantanamo, they are given nothing. Even confiscated belongings were not returned. .
Professor Yoo’s discredited and rescinded legal opinion allowed the Bush administration to establish a U.S. torture program at Guantanamo and elsewhere, allowing men tortured at Guantanamo to recover from their trauma. It is natural and expected that Professor Yoo will contribute to helping. In the spirit of restorative justice, we welcome Professor Yoo’s expression of reparation.
Delicious homemade brownies, cupcakes and cookies will be sold to raise money for the Guantanamo Survivors Fund. Donate to Guantanamo Survivors Fund | No More Guantanamos Please join us in distributing information leaflets and petitions to students calling for the prosecution of John Yoo for complicity in torture. Orange Guantanamo jumpsuits, handcuffs, and crime scene tape will be provided if needed for a citizen’s arrest.
