Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, had a secret Tumblr account.
The existence of the Tumblr account was brought up in a closed court hearing over whether Maxwell should be forced to provide additional documents to Virginia Roberts Giuffre during the discovery phase of the case, but records show It is currently open to the public. Giuffre accused Maxwell of trafficking people to Epstein for sex and defaming him when Epstein denied it.
Meredith Schultz, one of Giuffre’s attorneys, said Maxwell failed to turn over certain email records during the discovery phase of the lawsuit, which was settled in 2017.
Maxwell claimed that the email address gmax1@mindspring.com was used as a spam account when signing up at the retailer. But Schultz said in a closed hearing that Maxwell used it to sign up for Tumblr as well as LinkedIn and Dropbox. She also pointed out Tumblr’s reputation for hosting porn.
“We also found evidence that she used it for her Tumblr account,” Schultz said. “This is a social media website that also has an inbox and messaging, more than 22 percent of the content on this social website is pornographic, and more than 16 percent of the accounts created there contain only porn. contained.”
A Tumblr representative confirmed to Business Insider that the existing account is associated with the gmax1@mindspring.com email address. A representative declined to provide additional information about Maxwell’s account, citing the company’s privacy policy.
Terramar Project, a marine conservation nonprofit run by Maxwell, had a Tumblr account with the username @tmpizzle. It has not been determined whether Maxwell registered an account using a MindSpring email address, and it appears to be part of a communication system used by Epstein to manage his household finances. Maxwell had a separate email address associated with her website in Terramar.
In the years since the hearing, Tumblr has changed its community guidelines and adopted a moderation policy that prohibits explicit content.
The transcripts were unsealed Monday following a ruling by U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska to unseal thousands of documents related to the civil suit between Giuffre and Maxwell.
Since last week, the documents have been published together in the public docket. The final batch is expected to be released later today, a person familiar with the rollout process told Business Insider.
Lawyers in the civil case held a hearing in November 2016 to discuss the ongoing discovery process. Lawyers for Mr. Giuffre and Mr. Maxwell had wanted Mr. Epstein removed from office, believing his testimony would strengthen their case in the lawsuit.
But Epstein’s lawyers intervened, arguing that doing so would violate his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Epstein had already served a short prison sentence in 2008 for prostitution charges and had entered into a controversial non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in Florida. Still, Mr. Giuffre’s attorney, Martin G. Weinberg, noted that Mr. Giuffre has filed a separate lawsuit seeking to invalidate the agreement and that the Fifth Amendment protects Mr. Giuffre. said it should.
Epstein ultimately never appeared for a deposition in the case. An appeals court ultimately upheld the non-prosecution agreement, but federal prosecutors in Manhattan filed sex trafficking charges against Epstein in 2019, arguing they did not apply to their jurisdiction. Epstein hanged himself in prison before going to trial. Maxwell was later arrested and convicted in 2021 of trafficking girls to Epstein for sex. She is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.
This apparent Tumblr account is not mentioned in any other court documents reviewed by Business Insider.
Maxwell is also rumored to run one of the most popular Reddit accounts of all time, although that theory has not been proven.
