World premiere at Steppenwolf Theater barking house
Laura Alcala Baker will direct a play by Matthew Paul Olmos that centers around youth activism.

Steppenwolf Theater Company presents the world premiere of Matthew Paul Olmos’ work. The Barking House (or The House That Was a Valley). The production, which focuses on youth activities, will be performed at the Chicago venue from February 7th to March 2nd. Laura Alcala Baker will be at the helm.
Drawing from the real-life struggles of displaced communities around the world, Olmos’ modern mythology follows Soledad Vargas as his family fights for their right to live on their land. When her hopes begin to fade, how far will she go and what will she have left behind?
The cast includes Tim Hopper (downstateChicago and Off-Broadway) with Charyn Alvarez (I’m not your perfect Mexican girl, Bernarda!), Leslie Sophia Perez (I’m not your perfect Mexican girl), Isabel Quintero (La Osa Menor) and Eddie Torres (downstateChicago, Off-Broadway).
The production includes set design by Lauren Nichols, costume design by Uriel Gomez, lighting design by Lindsey Riddan, sound design by Peter Clare, original music by April Dawn Guthrie, and combat by Maya Vinis Prentice. It will feature choreography and intimacy consulting, as well as vocal coaching by Kate DeVore. Music consulting was provided by Mike Przygoda, casting was provided by JC Clements CSA, and dramaturgy was provided by Bryar Barborka. Patrick Zachem will serve as creative producer. Elise Hausken will serve as production manager, with production stage manager Michelle Medvin and assistant stage manager Kathleen Barrett.
