FOSTER, R.I. (WPRI) — A Foster City business owner is asking the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) to repair a broken mailbox, saying it was hit and damaged by a snowplow during a recent snowstorm. There is.
“Sunday, I was plowing my property in a snowstorm,” said Paul Hayhurst, owner of GCC Auto Sales. “I parked in front of the gate. A state truck passed by, but it was no big deal. He was doing what he had to do. He looked nice. The other truck that was chasing him passed by at high speed.”
Hayhurst shared surveillance footage with 12 News of the frustrating moment a snowplow drove through her parking lot, hit her mailbox and sent a pile of snow onto her truck.
“I backed up, waved it off, went back to the gate, and saw the mail floating in the air,” Hayhurst said. “That guy was definitely too fast.”
Hayhurst asked RIDOT for answers, but the agency told him they could only help if he had the snowplow’s license plate number or filed a claim. The conversation made him feel uneasy. “I felt like I couldn’t get any help from the people in charge,” Hayhurst said.
12 News contacted RIDOT and the agency suggested business owners fill out a mailbox damage report on its website. Hayhurst said he did it himself and eventually screwed the mailbox back into place himself. However, he is not satisfied with the DOT’s response to the incident, raising safety concerns about what happened.
“You see the force coming out of the spray? That guy kicked the spray — I measured it about 30 feet,” he said. “If I had been outside, or if any of my guys had been outside with a shovel, they would have gone to the hospital.”
