Friends remember Carter as a positive light. Carter was reportedly shot and killed while vacationing in New Orleans with her husband, Daniel.
Friends close to the family told News 3’s Rusty Surrett that Carter has ties to the Bryan-College Station area and that his family owns Madisonville-based Carter Enterprises. He said he operates several fast food restaurants in the area.
“It’s really sad to know that one of the brightest lights in this community has gone,” Torn Kramer said.
Kramer said it’s because of their kindness that the Tacoma, Wash., area supports Carter and her husband’s business, Howdy Bagels.

“What they brought to the community was that people came not only for really good food, but also for the good company,” Kramer said. “They were very upbeat, positive and happy.”
Kramer said memorials are growing outside the bagel store, and donations to a GoFundMe set up to cover the store’s rent, employee wages and other expenses have nearly doubled to its $50,000 goal. It is said that he did.
“It’s such a beautiful moment to see how much everyone has rallied behind all of this,” Kramer said. “Jake, Dan and the staff have touched so many lives. This will hit us for some time.”
Sources said Carter was walking with her husband when the shooting, which appeared to be an attempted armed robbery, occurred.
NOPD has not released details of potential suspects or arrests.
According to an Instagram post from the Howdy Bagel account, Jake Carter was a man who “exuded kindness, warmth, and genuine concern for everyone he met.”
