BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A special project teacher in the Boardman School District received a grant to help bring his idea to life.
Thanks to the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence, 26 Boardman educators and staff have been awarded $26,000 in grants. This money will be used to purchase new equipment, books and supplies for students in the Boardman area.
Kindergarten teacher Shana Higgins helped write the grant for the STEM bin. The bins feature games that exercise students’ problem-solving skills and creativity.
“We’re not using iPads or computers all the time, we’re just working together. These are not the materials that we as teachers are given when we start a class,” Higgins said. “We only have basic textbooks and pencils, so having these materials makes the kids happy and excited and interested in learning.”
Another project involves purchasing new nonfiction books. English teacher Jenefer Basista said it’s been a struggle for honors students to grow, but her last grant to buy new books has made a difference.
“I meet talented readers all day long. They’ve already hit their ceiling, so it’s a little more difficult to show them growth,” Basista said. “I’ve been struggling with this as a teacher for the past few years, but last year I had great success.”
Health teacher Kendall Daltrio’s project aims to train and certify CPR. This grant will be used to purchase new adult- and toddler-sized mannequins.
“I think this is helpful because it can save so many lives. I always tell my students that even if you don’t have the qualifications or have learned CPR, you can do CPR. says it can be done,” Daltorio said.
More grants were awarded for social-emotional projects, including a “Sensory Store” and “First Tee School” golf programs for elementary school students.
