SACRAMENTO – Dry January is in full swing as millions of Americans abstain from alcohol for a month.
It’s a welcome sight for The Tetotalist, a Sacramento business working to eliminate the stigma surrounding the sober lifestyle. The non-alcoholic bar is offering mocktails at its pop-up store during the month-long challenge.
The Teetotalist is kicking off Dry January with a pop-up location at Propagate (1700 I Street, Sacramento). Located in the Jungle Room off 17th Street, we are open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5pm to 10pm, except Friday, January 12th.
Owner Amanda Altman Brincat knows what it’s like to need a clean slate. As her unhealthy relationship with alcohol continued, she decided to get sober in her summer of 2022.
“When I was celebrating, when I was sad, when I was happy, when I was angry… there was always a reason for me to drink. I don’t like doing things when I’m not drinking. I realized that,” Altman-Brincat said.
She and her partner Kathryn observed a noticeable difference when they went “dry.”
“I only planned to take three months off, but after a month I realized it was the right path for me,” Altman Brincat said. “I felt so much better, slept better, and was able to focus more on my relationships. I thought I’d just keep going and I’m so glad I did.”
The couple turned their sobriety into creativity, experimenting with non-alcoholic spirits in their kitchen.
“The more I talked to people, the more I realized that everyone knew someone who didn’t drink,” Altman-Brincat said. “Whether it’s because of medication, whether it’s because you’re in recovery, whether it’s because you’re pregnant, or because of your religion.”
Together, they founded The Teetotalist, Sacramento’s only non-alcoholic bar and social club.
“I’ve always been very sociable and liked going out and doing things with other people, but when I first started getting sober, I found myself being around people who were drinking. ,” Altman Brincat said.
Serving craft mocktails, zero-proof cocktails and other non-alcoholic beverages, The Teetotalist hosts live music events, art shows and trivia nights.
Upcoming Dry January events include “Mean Girls Trivia Night” on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m., and “Taylor Swift Night” on Saturday, Jan. 13.
