GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The popular winter festival is back — “World of Winter” begins Friday across the city of Grand Rapids with more than 150 free events, activities and outdoor art installations.
Festival organizers say it is the largest winter festival in the United States and provides an opportunity for families and adults to enjoy Michigan’s winter.
Several events are planned for the downtown area during the festival’s two months, but one of the opening weekend’s activities has already been postponed due to a major winter storm heading toward West Michigan.
The “Luminary Light Night Parade” scheduled for Friday, January 12th has been postponed due to heavy snow and strong winds expected.

Festival organizers said they had been monitoring the situation ahead of Saturday’s “Fire & Ice” event and would continue to do so.
Bill Kirk of Downtown GR Inc. said, “Like everyone else, we will be keeping an eye on the weather and working hard to hold the event safely.” We hope not, but if it does, we will announce it on our social media channels and on the WorldOfWinterGR.com website. For now, I’m planning on continuing to do it as long as the wind is decent and the temperatures are ok. “It’s tonight’s event,” he said.
Downtown GR Inc. told FOX 17 that decisions to postpone or cancel an event are always made on the same day.
Despite possible postponements or cancellations, most art installations will remain open to the public. There will be a variety of works from all over the world, including Canada, Belgium, and even Australia.
