A local organization has raised nearly $1,000 in just a few days to help homeless pets.
Angel Fund OKC used the funds to purchase new dog crates for the Homeless Alliance Day shelter. “We are ready to do everything we can to ensure the safety and care of our neighbors, because everyone is entitled to that care, dignity and compassion, and that extends to their pets. ” Taylor said. Self, communications director for the Homeless Alliance.
As the wind howls outside on Friday, people dealing with homelessness in downtown Oklahoma City are looking for all kinds of shelter from the cold. “Everyone needs a safe place, especially when temperatures are this dangerous,” Self said.
Self said the Homeless Alliance provides the only day shelter in Oklahoma City. We are open all year round. “There’s no other place like it,” said shelter user Phil R. Booker. “It gets you off the street and frees up all your resources and blessings.”
Self said the shelter has helped an average of 372 people each day for the past 11 days, with up to 500 people showing up on cold days, many with pets. “If you can’t take your pet to a shelter, they don’t have access to that shelter,” she says.
Therefore, pets are welcome here. The shelter offers an outdoor kennel area year-round to house the animals, but as the cold weather approaches, the animals will be moved indoors. “I’ve seen with my own eyes that pet owners and parents take care of their animals first before taking care of themselves,” said Nani Paxton, a volunteer at the shelter.
Paxton has logged more than 600 hours of volunteer work and wanted to help, so she and others are helping the shelter set up more dog kennels donated through a GoFundMe campaign hosted by Angel Fund OKC. I cleaned up the classroom. In just a few days, she raised $900 to purchase more than a dozen crates for the shelter. “There are blankets in the crate and food in it,” Paxton said. “Angel Fund has been really helpful for our fur babies.”
