(CNN) — Congressional leaders have reached an agreement on a two-tranche short-term funding bill to keep the government funded through March, sources told CNN.
The new continuing resolution would provide funding to the government from March 1 to March 8. The agreement was made just before the initial funding deadline of January 19th. The deadline for the second round of government funding was February 2nd.
House Republicans are scheduled to hold a conference call Sunday night to discuss the continuing resolution, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. The text of the resolution is expected to be released on Sunday night, said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Schumer and House Speaker Mike Johnson announced over the weekend that they had reached an agreement on total spending, the first step in the federal funding process.
These numbers include $1.59 trillion in fiscal year 2024, including $886 billion in defense spending and $704 billion in non-defense spending. Mr. Schumer and Mr. Johnson also agreed to a $69 billion side agreement that would be used to cover non-defense domestic spending.
But far-right members of the House Republican conference have denounced the deal, with some calling for it to include changes to border policy in exchange for not shutting down the government. The headwinds highlight the challenge for Mr Johnson, who leads a razor-thin majority.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday that the deal remained in place after a meeting with conservatives appeared to indicate at least an intention to scrap it.
