NEW YORK (AP) — Soon, someone will be walking down the street proudly carrying a ridiculously large bag that they bought at a ridiculously large price.

The voluminous Burberry tote, one of the most famous props used in “Succession,” the famous HBO story about the Roy family dynasty, sold for $18,750 at auction on Saturday.

However, the bag, which gained notoriety after being heavily mocked by Matthew Macfadyen’s character Tom Onesguns, is expected to be sorted out at Monday’s Emmy Awards following his Golden Globe win. It wasn’t even the most expensive item sold from the set of Toxic Drama.

No, it was a set of pink index cards containing Roman Roy’s memorial notes for his father’s funeral. He never gave a speech. His four cards, which begin with “My father Logan Roy was a great man,” represent Roman (Kieran Culkin)’s tragic failure to live up to that moment. They now have a new life with someone who paid them $25,000 and will hopefully frame them well.

The online auction, conducted by Dallas Heritage Auctions on behalf of HBO, ended Saturday with 236 lots selling for a total of $627,825. As a result, not only did people love the show, but the meaningful objects, rather than the show’s high-end “stealth” fashion, attracted most bidder interest, said Robert Wilonski, a spokesman for Heritage. He said that it was shown that.

“At the end of the day, it was the key moments in the show that resonated with fans,” he says.

Props often take a backseat to costumes. After all, awards shows don’t have awards for “best props” like costumes, points out “Succession” prop master Monica Jacobs, who joined the show after the pilot episode. However, the props department will make every effort to ensure that you have the right item, even if it only appears for a few seconds. Jacobs shared the origin stories of some of the show’s most iconic props.

oven dried scorpion

Why did Tom give his wife Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) a paperweight of a dried scorpion encased in resin? who knows? It certainly showed the turmoil in their marriage, and it also caused several hours of chaos in Jacobs’ kitchen.

“I found out that you can easily buy (dead) scorpions,” she says. “But scorpions are small. It wasn’t easy to make them big enough.”

Once I had the bunches (I always need duplicates) I had to soak them to loosen the glue so I could rearrange them for maximum effect. She stabilized them with wire and baked them slowly over low heat for hours until they were dry enough to wrap. All for a brief appearance. And it’s probably sitting on someone’s desk. The reproduction sold for a cool (and burnt) $10,000.

words of sadness

Roman’s sad pink notecard with a never-spoken eulogy wasn’t the only scrawled word that fetched a high price. On the day Logan died on his private plane, it was Shiv who spoke to waiting reporters.

“You understand that I won’t take any questions, but my brothers and I just want to say that Logan Roy founded a great American family company…” she said. said.

The words were written in block letters in Snoke’s own handwriting. She created her first card and then her writing was recreated due to duplicates. Similarly, Jacobs says Culkin’s handwriting inspired his pink notecards. As for Jeremy Strong, who played Kendall, he often preferred to write all the copy himself. Shiv’s speech card sold for $17,500.

Um…bag

Let’s say Bridget, on a date with her cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) at Logan’s birthday party, chooses an unfortunate accessory. Tom, in the worst of Human Grease fashion, imagined aloud what was inside the “ridiculously capacious” tote. “Subway flats? Her lunch bucket? …You can take them camping. You can slide them on the floor after work at the bank.”

Jacobs explains that it was a collaboration between the props and wardrobe departments to find the perfect bag to match the script.

“Everyone brought a version,” she says. “I had to decide how big this bag really was.” It also needed to be just the right level of high-end, “not quite enough for Roy’s world, but still higher-end than mine.” she says jokingly. Ultimately, costume designer Michelle Maitland “had the vision,” says Jacobs.

The winning bidder also won an embroidered dress by Sandro.

make those magazines look real

When the Roys appear on the cover of New York magazine, you might think they just pieced together a few pages in an art studio. But that’s not the case.

It begins by creating the actual issue of the magazine and accurately measuring its weight and size. We then carefully create not only the cover but also the inside pages.

Making a magazine look authentic is “a very delicate process,” Jacobs said. “We’re very particular about how we do things.”

The cover sold for $10,000.

Some of these sausages were real

Remember that horrible game, or hazing ritual, that Logan put his poor executives through, making them moan like pigs and beg for sausage? Some were real sausages, some were fake, depending on your needs. (The prop sausage group cost him $5,250.)

But for the most part, Jacobs says, the food at weddings and other gatherings was not only authentic, but complex, evocative of the place, and fun to make.

“Every cheese board should be a little different from the last time you made a cheese board,” she says. “We got really creative.”

So what about drugs? It’s not true

Have you ever wondered what the cocaine was used for on set? A set of vials containing the white powder sold for $2,000. Jacobs and her colleagues needed to use a substance that looked real and was also… snorty.

In this case, it was inositol, a naturally occurring sugar. Lactose powder was sometimes used “as long as the person could tolerate lactose.”

Same goes for credit cards

Three of the Roy family’s credit cards were put up for auction, but local supermarkets won’t accept them. The cards were created by a graphic designer, sent to a specialty store in New York, and printed on plastic or metal.

“The plastic ones are actually much more durable as props,” Jacobs says. “But with the Succession characters, it made sense to have them mostly made of metal,” she added.

surely. Kendall’s cards (two American Express Platinum, two Mastercard, and one driver’s license) cost $10,000.
