McIntosh held the lead after the first 100 meters and turned around in the breaststroke portion, beating Walsh by more than a second in 58.97 seconds. However, as expected, Walsh moved with a breaststroke leg.
Walsh closed the gap on McIntosh in the 50 meters of breaststroke, holding a 0.08 second advantage over McIntosh going into the final 50 meters. It all came down to the freestyle leg, and when it mattered most, McIntosh outscored Walsh 30.01 to 30.56.
