Wednesday is elf makeup.
The new musical movie “Mean Girls” has come under fire on TikTok for its extensive product placement, especially featuring elf cosmetics.
Viewers took to social media platforms to express outrage over the brand’s seemingly two-hour ad.
“POV: The whole ‘Mean Gils’ movie,” one person captioned the clip alongside some Elf products as songs from the movie played in the background.
A commenter who saw the film understood on TikTok and wrote, “Regina will only wear the best like Dior, Charlotte Tilbury, and Chanel.”
Another added: “My name is Regina George and I have a big (brand) deal (with Elf).”
Regina George is the nickname for Renee Rapp’s so-called “Mean Girl” and Queen Bee character, a role famously played by Rachel McAdams in the 2004 original film.
Another user claimed that there was a “20 minute ELF ad that played before the movie” at the movie theater.
One person commented and affirmed the commercial, saying, “There was that long Elf ad before the movie, and now the movie itself is another long Elf ad.”
“When advertising was better than movies…” someone exclaimed. “Literally, me and my friends were like, how long is this ad?”
In the third clip, some wanted to drool over Aaron Samuels, played by Chris Blaney, but were disappointed to see that much of the movie was filled with product placement.
“POV: Watch 1 hour and 52 minutes of Elf Makeup Ads to get new content from Conrad Fisher,” the person wrote in the video, starring the teen romance series The Summer I Turned Pretty. mentioned another character in Blainey.
One user asked: “Literally mean girls, did they really need the sponsor money?”
Another viewer shrugged and said: “A movie or an ad?”
“I was literally wondering about everything elf-related!”
TikTokers didn’t seem to realize that the new movie was actually a musical. “This is not the ‘Mean Girls’ I came to see,” one person raved on TikTok alongside a clip of the rap song. “What the hell happened?”
Others in the comments section rolled their eyes at the clip, with one scoffing: “What did you expect from ‘Mean Girls Musical’ 💀?”
A second viewer explained: “This is all based on a Broadway musical, not a movie. They still messed it up anyway, but we feel it’s important to know that because it actually makes the situation worse. .”
“How can you not tell it’s a musical when it literally says Mean Girls Musical? Context clues show you don’t understand the context 🤣?”
The current musical version is a remake of the Broadway production that premiered in 2017, which is itself an iteration of the 2004 Tina Fey and Mark Waters comedy film.
