The University of St. Thomas has selected an alumnus as its new investment director. John “JJ” Kirby assumed the position on January 16th.
Mr. Kirby has nearly 20 years of experience in institutional and high net worth portfolio management across traditional and alternative asset classes and reports to Chief Investment Officer Sonali Dalal.
Within the four-person investment office, Mr. Kirby will be responsible for research, sourcing and due diligence across all asset classes, including public and private equity, venture capital, real estate, hedge funds and credit.
He also participates in strategic investment planning by performing asset class research and portfolio-level analysis in support of asset allocation, portfolio construction, and future investment commitments, and takes the lead in evaluating and recommending investments across asset classes. play a role.
Kirby comes to St. Thomas from Envoi, an independent, management-owned family office specializing in high-net-worth client advisory. During his 10 years with the firm, he rose through the ranks, most recently serving as senior director of investment research. He was also a portfolio manager and analyst for the Minnesota State Investment Board (MSBI).

Mr. Kirby is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) and earned a bachelor’s degree in Financial Management and Marketing Management from the University of St. Thomas in 2006. He also earned his MBA from the University of St. Thomas in 2013.
As an undergraduate at the University of St. Thomas, he participated in a variety of recreational sports, also competing in varsity football and track and field, where he was named team captain and earned All-MIAC honors as a senior in track and field. I did it.

Mr. Kirby, who is married with four children, is active in various community organizations in his spare time. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota and Chairman of the Investment Committee. He is a member of the Investment Committee of the Workers’ Compensation Reinsurance Association. He is also the president of the Eagan Athletic Association, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality youth sports programs.
