LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Republican Dan Schwartz, who served as state Treasury secretary under Gov. Brian Sandoval, joined four other Republicans on Wednesday seeking to unseat Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Susie Lee. He joined the group and announced his intention to run for Congress.
Mr. Schwartz, who enters the race after other candidates have had a significant head start in campaign fundraising, has pledged to use $1 million of his own money.
Lee narrowly won re-election in the 2022 election, defeating April Becker by a margin of about 10,000 votes (about 4% of the vote). She was expected to face a challenge from Republican state Rep. Heidi Kasama, but Kasama withdrew from the race in early January. He said Republicans can’t afford to lose seats in the Legislature with Democrats closing in on a supermajority to override Gov. Joe Lombardo’s veto.
Mr. Schwartz was a shake-up as treasurer, at one point vetoing Mr. Sandoval’s budget and pushing his own that actively supported school vouchers.
“I was proud to serve overseas in the Army, turn around a failing business, and then be elected as Nevada State Treasurer. Today, our country needs a reboot. That change needs to start right here in Nevada. I’m not afraid to challenge this system, and I’m ready to take the fight to Washington,” Schwartz said in a campaign announcement.
Mr. Schwartz is running against Mr. Lee on behalf of the Republican Party, along with Republicans Elizabeth Helgelien, Drew Johnson, Steve London and Steve Shiffman.
Schwartz ran for governor in 2018, but lost in the Republican primary, and again in 2022, when he ran for lieutenant governor.
Schwartz listed the following priorities in his campaign platform statement:
- Invest in Americans through a fair tax system that creates an economy that lifts the middle class and expands opportunity for workers.
- Term limits so that Congress and the courts encourage new leadership rather than empowering career politicians.
- Encourage public service and provide new incentives to serve in military or non-military positions.
- Close the border until Congress does its job and fixes our broken immigration system.
