The Batavia Park District recently won a grant from an Illinois Department of Natural Resources program to help fund renovations to the future Patrick J. Callahan Community Center building at 150 Houston Street in downtown Batavia.
The IDNR Parks and Recreation Construction Act (PARC) grant program is part of Governor JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois Capital Improvement Program. The park district will receive $2.8 million during the project.
The Callahan Community Center is scheduled to open in 2027. In 2021 he purchased his two-story building of 12,420 square feet in the Batavia Park District. The building will be repurposed into a community recreation center to increase the district’s indoor recreation space.
Batavia Park District Executive Director Alison Niemela said, “The District is particularly excited about this project because it allows us to use reserves and capital budget funds to pay for construction without raising taxes.” . “Future plans will respond to the changing needs and trends of the community and benefit residents of all ages.”
In 2022, the Batavia Historical Society entered into a donation agreement with the park district to fund the initial We donated $430,000 to the district. Space for museum staff.
Other facilities at the center include a community room for local organizations to meet or host board meetings, and an active area used as a social space for activities such as adult trivia teams that can easily transition into games. There are multipurpose rooms for elderly people. Space for the Batavia Seniors Club, an enrichment room for children, and administrative space for staff moving in from the Civic Center. This facility will be ADA accessible with an elevator and ramp.
A total of 13 recreation projects across the state were awarded more than $28 million in funding to acquire or develop land for recreation or public access. Local governments will match the amount of the grant.
The remainder of the Callahan Community Center project will be funded through the district’s capital development program.
Renovations include demolition of existing offices, restrooms, and closets. Installation of elevator. Also includes carpentry, drywall, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, safety systems, finishes, furniture, and more. The parking lot will be modified to be ADA accessible.
