A Kansas couple has been indicted on charges that they fraudulently collected more than $215,000 in retirement benefits in exchange for hiding the bodies of their deceased relatives in their home for six years.
Authorities say Mike Carroll’s pacemaker showed he died in 2016 at age 81, but his son-in-law, Kirk Ritter, reported his death to police in a Kansas City suburb. It wasn’t until 2022 that Overland Park police discovered his body.
Prosecutors say Lynn Ritter and Kirk Ritter, both 61, kept access to Carroll’s bank accounts even as her body was “mummified” in her bed at home. He said that he had continued to receive and spend money since then. Lynn Ritter is Carol’s daughter.
Family members told the Kansas City Star that the Ritters tried to trick Carol into believing she was still alive, but kept asking them why she wasn’t answering their phone calls or making them available for visits. He said he was making excuses.
The couple, who are scheduled to appear in federal court on February 2 to face multiple charges, have not responded to calls or emails from the newspaper, and court documents do not list attorneys representing them. .
Prosecutors said Carroll’s pension and Social Security payments totaled $216,067 in the six years after his death. However, bank records from the time showed that Lynn and Kirk Ritter drew checks from his bank account and cashed them.
