New Jersey’s Transportation Trust Fund, which helps pay for road construction and many other projects, must be renewed by June 30 for the first time in eight years.
Gas taxes put a lot of money into that fund, so the move toward electric vehicles raises some questions.
The state recently signed a rule banning the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in New Jersey starting in 2035.
Greg Larrabee is the owner of the union that represents the workers you see on the highways.
“Gasoline and gas taxes are going to be a dwindling revenue source, but how are we going to keep paving the same amount of roads, what are the proposals for that, or what kind of discussions are there around that?” he asked.
Laravy, who is also vice chairman of the Transportation Trust Fund, said the driving mechanics of electric vehicles could be a big factor in how much gasoline tax revenue can replace them in the electric vehicle era. “We were able to collect a third of (the gas tax) from out-of-state drivers. I don’t know if that would be the same metric for electric cars. Just as many drivers stopped out of state. I don’t even know if I’m going to do it or not.” New Jersey is going to recharge as I travel here,” he said.
Last year, the New Jersey Department of Transportation launched a voluntary pilot program to explore the use of mileage-based tolls as an alternative to gas taxes.
LaRavie said the state’s ability to obtain federal funding for the project depends on renewing the trust fund.
“With so much money in the infrastructure bill passed by Congress and an equal amount of funding from the federal government, it’s just better to build a home here in New Jersey,” he said.
