A Ferndale woman faces two felony charges of uttering and publishing after police say she tried to cash a stolen check from a wine shop on New Year’s Eve.
Kelly France, 33, appeared in Ferndale 43rd District Court on Monday for arraignment.
The two charges against her each carry a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.
Police said they were called to the Select Wine Shop, 1318 W. Nine Mile Road, around 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 31.
According to police, France had successfully cashed a stolen business check at the same store on September 22, 2023.
When she returned to the wine store to cash another stolen business check, store personnel noticed her and alerted Ferndale police, Ferndale Police Sgt. Janessa Danielson.
Police said the check cashed in September was for $980 and the suspect left with the money.
France was trying to cash an $880 check when police showed up and arrested him.
“Officers investigated and it appears the check was fraudulent,” Danielson said.
Both checks were determined to have been stolen from another business in Warren, but police withheld the name of the business.
Danielson said two checks were stolen during the two reported store break-ins.
“The trespassing (incident) is being handled by the Warren Police Department,” Danielson said.
Police said when France was arrested, he denied the check was fraudulent.
Danielson said there was no indication that the suspect in any of the speaking and publishing offenses charged in Ferndale attempted to purchase items from the wine shop.
French was arraigned Monday before Ferndale 43rd District Court Judge J. Patrick Brennan and released on $5,000 personal bail.
Danielson said France has a fairly extensive criminal history, including past fraud charges.
The suspect’s next hearing in Ferndale District Court is scheduled for Jan. 29 at 1 p.m.
