HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A fire at the Canterbury Green Shopping Center in western Henrico County has devastated several small business owners and their weekly customers.
Henrico County Fire Department officials say a fire broke out at the shopping center at 10615 Patterson Ave. on Monday, Jan. 22, around 10 p.m., resulting in “significant losses.”
“I was just shocked and honestly speechless for most of the day. It’s just not what you expect.” Annie Mae, one of the businesses affected by the fire said Brady Zizzo, owner of & Wes. “I started this company once before, so I’m going to do it again.”
Zizzo said his biggest concern is that 16 employees are now out of work.
“My biggest priority is making sure the people I serve are taken care of,” she said.
A shopping center known for its “mom and pop stores.” Zizzo said moving forward is her only option, even as she and her fellow business owners accept the loss.
“I didn’t quite believe it at first, but I still have to be honest,” Zizzo said. “So I’m trying to figure out what to do from here. We’re trying to make sure we can find the space, materials and equipment we need to reopen so we can get our staff to work.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
