ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A new lounge in Nob Hill says it’s setting records for its intentions after some neighbors voiced concerns. The owners of Oak and Ivy say they are not planning a nightclub, but an upscale nightlife experience. “We think there is demand and demand for a fun late-night environment that you typically find in big markets like Austin like Scottsdale,” said operating partner Gerardo Zamora.
Taking over the space formerly occupied by Yannies, Oak and Ivy’s owners admitted they were looking to shake things up. “Typically, this is referred to as something like an ultra-he lounge where the main focus isn’t necessarily dancing or anything, but provides a more elevated experience,” Zamora said.
The owners insist they will not turn it into a nightclub after recent criticism from neighbors. “Our experience with Nob Hill nightclubs has been terrible,” said Nob Hill Neighborhood Association President Gary Eyster.
“We are well aware that Nob Hill has a history of involvement with traditional nightclubs, and we absolutely do not want that to happen for a variety of reasons. One is that the community… So both are for our own little sense of self,” Zamora said.
Instead, the owners say they have three goals, including a fine dining experience planned along with several other ideas. “More fun environment, louder music, yes there’s also a DJ. Yes, we’re going to invite people to dance at the tables, but that’s not the main focus,” Zamora said. .
There are currently two components of the business in operation. There’s a room they call the “Ultralounge” and a smaller room with a DJ and space to dance. “I think a lot of things are missing in order to satisfy the community and our guests. In fact, I know a lot of friends who don’t normally spend their weekends in town,” Zamora said. .
The town’s owners want to keep people and their money in town, and said the main focus, the restaurant, is still under construction. “We’re still renovating this side, which is the traditional Yanni’s area, which is the largest part of the restaurant,” said operating partner Brian Luna.
The plan is to serve lunch, dinner, late-night dining, and eventually brunch. “We’re going to have a chef-designed menu. We’re going to really focus on our food and bring quality food to Albuquerque. I mean, it’s something we really think is needed.” It’s about being there,” Luna said.
The store is scheduled to fully open in March.
