WASHINGTON, DC (WWLP) – The restoration of Cape Cod’s Sagamore Bridge will receive funding from the federal government.
President Biden and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg will provide more than $4.9 billion in funding to 37 projects across the country through the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) Grant Program and the Infrastructure to Rebuild America (INFRA) Grant Program. Announced.
The Sagamore Bridge project received $371 million through the mega program. The approximately 90-year-old bridge requires restoration and modernization to meet modern structural design standards, including consideration of climate change, seismic effectiveness, and safety benefits.
The bridge is “currently considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient,” USDOT said in a news release to 22News.
The Healey administration announced in December that it would work to replace both the Sagamore and Bourne bridges over the Cape Cod Canal. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) jointly applied with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for a $1.06 billion grant through the Bridge Investment Program (BIP) Bridge Projects Program for the replacement of the Sagamore Bridge.

The Sagamore Bridge Project is the first phase of the Cape Cod Bridge Program to upgrade the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges and the surrounding roadway system. The existing bridge is owned and operated by the USACE and is the only way for motor vehicles to access the Cape Cod Canal.
The Sagamore Bridge was chosen to be repaired first because it receives the most traffic and could benefit the surrounding community sooner.
