Jordan Stoltz has set a new world record.
Skating at the ISU World Cup meet at Salt Lake’s Olympic Oval on Friday night, Stolz won the men’s 1,000 meters in an impressive time of 1:05.37.
Stolz broke Pavel Krizhnikov’s world record of 1:05.69, set in 2020 at the same venue.
This is known as a fast venue. Utah’s altitude and thin air create ideal racing conditions.
“I felt like I had a good race,” Stolz told US Speed Skating. “The open air was faster than I expected. The inner turns were really good on the first lap. I felt like I still had power in the outer turns. By the time I came out of the outer exit, I was already half way through the course. It felt like I was coming,” before I started stroking right away.
“I felt really good on the last lap.”
Stolz set a world record Friday that will transform the walls of the Oval at the Utah Olympics.
When asked by the USA Speed Skating social media crew how he felt about breaking the world record, Stolz replied:
“Well, I didn’t expect to win by three-tenths, but I think I’m ready to beat Pavel now.
“Where is he?” Stolz grinned.
According to NBC Sports, the last American athlete to break an individual world record was Shani Davis in the 1,500 meters in December 2009, also in Utah.
A week earlier, Stolz skated 1:06.27 at the Four Continents Championships, also held in Utah, breaking the American 1,000-meter record and taking Davis’ record.
For Stolz, this was the circuit where he would be active at the World Cup all winter long. He recently won gold in the 1,000 meters and silver in the 1,500 meters for Poland. In December, Stolz performed well in the World Cup race in Norway. His 1,000m was the fastest time and he won the 1,500m, setting a record.
For the second year in a row, 19-year-old Stolz has expanded his races from 500-meter and 1,000-meter sprints to long-distance races.
