detail: Foreign Minister Landsbergis mentioned the European Peace Fund regarding measures that Lithuania can take to further support Ukraine in the fight against full-scale Russian aggression.
“And unfortunately, this is the only European tool used to support Ukraine in this war,” he added.
“Although we were unable to reach any specific agreement or coordination on this issue, we are now more optimistic about future steps (through the EPF). Some Member States have already started considering and they understand that it has to happen,” the Lithuanian said. The Foreign Minister emphasized.
Since last year, the European Union has been discussing the reform of the EPF and the creation of a special fund within it dedicated to Ukraine’s needs. This is a four-year program with a total budget of 20 billion euros.
Hungary actively opposed the plan, but media reports say it has withdrawn its opposition.
Hungary has also blocked for months the allocation of a 500 million euro tranche from the EPF that was to be used to offset arms supplies to Ukraine.
