Animal Welfare Fund Announces Grants to 22 Michigan Shelters

MICHIGAN – The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 Animal Welfare Fund Grants. This year, thanks to Michiganders who check the “Animal Welfare Fund” box on their annual state tax returns, MDARD will send funds to 22 registered animal shelters across the state to support various animal welfare projects. will distribute $150,000.
“Over the past few years, MDARD has seen a steady increase not only in the number of shelters applying for Animal Welfare Fund grants, but also in the amount of funding requested.” State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “Grants are having a tremendous positive impact on Michigan’s animals and the people who care for them. As Michiganders prepare their state tax returns, they will be able to support the animals waiting for their fur home. Please check the box for the Fund to continue your generous support.”
one hundred percent A portion of donations to the Animal Welfare Fund go directly to registered animal shelters in Michigan to help improve the care of local animals and support the broader community. Since 2010, MDARD has donated more than $1.9 million to more than 305 animal shelters.
According to statistics from the American Veterinary Medical Association, Michigan is home to approximately 2.6 million dogs and 1.8 million cats. And some of these animals live in one of Michigan’s 209 registered animal shelters, waiting to become someone’s beloved pet.
Grants through the Michigan Animal Welfare Fund help shelters fund spay/neuter programs, educate others about proper animal care, train staff, and improve animal health throughout the community. It helps provide a means to maintain. Together, these efforts help shelters adopt out more animals and promote the health and welfare of animals in their communities. All of this is made possible by philanthropic Michiganders who check the box for the fund on their state tax return, Form 4642, Voluntary Giving Schedule.
For this year’s grant cycle, MDARD received 66 applications from organizations across the state, totaling more than $600,000 in applications. Some of the innovative projects selected this year include:
- Help fund training programs to increase the ability of animal control personnel to provide support to local communities and conduct welfare investigations.
- Expand pet protection efforts by providing microchips to animals in shelters and owners, as well as increasing access to microchip scanners throughout the community.
- Increase access to spay/neuter in underserved communities.
