Here at Georgia Southern University, a new generation of entrepreneurs is demonstrating that our campus is more than just a place of education, it serves as an encouraging environment for business.
Jason Roden, also known as Smoove Jay, is the owner of the clothing brand Smoove Apparels. He turned a tragic event of losing all his clothes into a success story.
“I ended up going on a trip and was planning to go back to Jamaica for a few months. I packed all my nicest clothes and left, but the airline lost all my luggage. No refunds or compensation. No, they gave me $500 and I used that $500 to promote the first drop,” Roden said.
Smoove Jay launched Smoove Apparels in 2021 because he says it’s all about being confident and not being cocky.
“Everyone focuses on the lifestyle behind the brand, but I focus more on the spirituality. “It’s more about the confidence that comes with that and how you can express yourself,” Roden said.
Cameron Burks is a junior at Georgia Southern, but he is also the owner of Five Star Detail. He starts his classes at 8am as a regular student and manages his business for the rest of the day by 12pm.
“When I started detailing cars, I realized that the overhead was low. So I thought about it for a bit and decided I should get some car detailing done when I moved back to Statesboro, so I went to a number of auto detailing companies in Statesboro. I looked to see if there were any tailings, and there were about three or four, so I said, yeah, this is the business for me,” Burks said.
Prime Minister David Cameron started the details just eight months ago and it has been so successful since August last year that he plans to hire people this year. His advice to student entrepreneurs: “Just keep going. The journey will probably be difficult along the way, but in the end, you’ll see what you worked hard for.” is.
