LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. (CBS) — Business owners said Tuesday they are worried about weekend shopping, but not so much for the first day. Partial closure of the bridge Provides transportation across the Delaware River.
“They want coffee morning, noon and night, so we’re here for them,” said Carolyn, owner of Union Coffee, located just off the New Hope-Lambertville Toll Bridge. Gadbois said.
Early Tuesday morning, crews reduced traffic on the bridge from Lambertville to one lane. This partial closure will last until the end of September 2024.
“Today I took a different route into town,” she said. “And I saw a lot of signs coming from the Pennsylvania side. So I was really excited to see that.”
That’s because she was also a member of the Greater Lambertville Chamber of Commerce. She said business owners will work with the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission to ensure the three-mile detour and adequate signage for more than vehicular traffic coming to the area, which is densely populated with small businesses. He said he worked hard to achieve this.
“Especially the changes to the sidewalks and traffic patterns in town and how that will impact the business community,” Gadbois said.
Lambertville business owners said the lane closure Tuesday was actually a good thing.
“Now that it’s a little bit slower, I think a lot of people will have a little bit more time to rethink their patterns and their travel,” Craig Andrews said.
Andrews owns Le Chocolate Box, also near the bridge. He said Tuesdays are usually slow at the confectionery shop. But he was excited that Lambertville Station Restaurant hosted an information session with government leaders.
“It’s like a preview of what’s going to happen with detailed maps and posters and things like that,” he says.
Andrews said she’s still concerned that foot traffic will slow on weekends and this summer, but she’s optimistic.
“If you have the will for chocolate, I think you can find a way to get through this,” he said.
