The Town of Fort Smith is raising money for the families of the six people killed in the Northwestern Airlines crash in the past two weeks, as well as the sole survivor of the crash.
The Northwestern Airlines jet was carrying workers from Fort Smith, about 305 kilometers south of Yellowknife along the Alberta border, to the Diavik Diamond Mine on Jan. 23 when it stopped 1 kilometer from Fort Smith’s airport. crashed not far away. Six people died in the accident and the only survivor was injured.
The city government recently launched two fundraising campaigns on GoFundMe: the Memorial Fund and the Survivors Fund. Mayor Fred Daniels said he hopes the fundraiser will help local residents heal.
“It’s going to take a long time to get through this situation,” Daniels told CBC News.
“The best thing we can do is help each other and be strong… There are families who are having a hard time right now. If we can somehow alleviate it and make it a little bit better, we will.”
As of 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Montana time, nearly $8,500 had been raised for the memorial fund and more than $5,300 for the survivors fund.
Proceeds from the memorial fund will be distributed equally to the families of the victims. Money from the Survivors Fund will go to Kurt McDonald as he recovers from his injuries.
Fort Smith Vice Mayor Deanna Collol said Rio Tinto Group, which owns the Diavik Diamond Mine, is covering all fees associated with the GoFundMe page, which will ensure all donations go directly to the families.
