What excites entrepreneurs?Interesting paper: “Anatomy of an Entrepreneur: Family Background and Motivation” by Vivek Wadhwa. other.part of the Kauffman Foundation Small-Scale Research Project.
Abstract of the paper:
“Entrepreneurs are some of the most famous people in our culture. Famous entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Sergey Brin, and Larry Page have appeared on the covers of prominent publications. The founders and innovators of these companies are driving economic growth and giving nations a competitive edge.
“Today, however, little is known about the backgrounds, lives, motivations, and beliefs of these entrepreneurs. As a result, myths and stereotypes are pervasive. The family is young, poorly educated, and unmarried workaholics with no children. They are perceived as coming from wealthy families and having graduated from elite universities.
“But is this true?
“This study answers some of these questions. It is based on a survey of 549 founders from 12 high-growth industries.
“We found that most founders came from middle-class or upper-lower class backgrounds, were highly educated, were married with children, and their primary motive for starting a business was to build wealth.” Other popular motives included leveraging his ideas for business. The charm of startup culture. A desire to own a company. And I lost interest in working for someone else. ”
