On a busy street in New York City, Stephanie Barr, a 33-year-old florist, has blossomed into a community leader and entrepreneur with a thriving business called ReadMyTulips. What started as a simple business to share the love of flowers has now evolved into a platform for women to connect, learn and network while nurturing their passion for flowers.
During the challenges of the pandemic, Barr found solace and purpose in the world of fresh flowers. She turned her passion into a business, offering floral classes to women in New York City to help them care for their flowers and plants. In addition to teaching floral techniques, Barr’s classes are a sanctuary for women to bond, share experiences, and support each other.
“The most rewarding part is what people get out of the class. I’m really into self-care, and flower arranging taps into just a small part of that and fosters a do-it-yourself self-care hobby. It also encourages people to do other things that lead to therapy, like writing in a journal. I also like that this helps build a community for women and make them feel comfortable because some of them are scared to do things from now on. I am. Come alone or make good friends with other women with common interests.
For Barr, ReadMyTulips is more than just a business, it’s a community of women empowering each other and building lasting connections. Her monthly workshops in Astoria Queens have earned a reputation for not only being educational, but also a luxurious experience where participants are immersed in the art of floral design while fostering meaningful relationships.
As a Black female small business owner, Barr has faced her fair share of challenges, but she is resilient and determined to succeed. She reflects on her own journey, learns from her setbacks, and acknowledges the importance of understanding the difference between what is meaningful to you and what is not.
Looking to the future, Barr has ambitious plans to expand ReadMyTulips beyond New York City and into other states across the country. Her vision is to build a network of flower lovers who share a passion for flowers and community building.
In a world filled with uncertainty, Barr’s story is a reminder of the power of passion, resilience, and community. Through her ReadMyTulips, she not only found her calling, but created a place where women can blossom and thrive together.
