6 of the 10 Most Expensive U.S. Subways for Families I’m in California.
Business Insider looked at the monthly expenses for a household of two adults and two children from the Economic Policy Institute’s Household Budget Calculator. EPI collected data from multiple sources and looked at several types of expenses that households may incur.
“The Household Budget Calculator is built to determine the funds a family needs to create a decent standard of living that covers basic necessities,” EPI’s post reads.
BI looked at families where both parents are “employed, live with their children, and file a joint federal income tax return.” There are also assumptions about the ages of the children: “Families with two children are assumed to have a 4-year-old and an 8-year-old,” EPI’s post says.
There are also some assumptions regarding miscellaneous costs. Categories such as healthcare. The budget calculator says that these expenses include “premiums and copayments, and that when a family purchases the lowest-cost Bronze plan on the health insurance exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act, It is assumed,” he said.
EPI’s post about the calculator states that the data is for 2023 or, if appropriate, “inflated to $2023 using an inflator appropriate to the budget line item.”
San Francisco ranked No. 1, or the most expensive metro city analyzed by EPI, based on total monthly costs of about $15,000. Based on the cost of a two-bedroom apartment, housing costs him more than $3,000 a month, which was his largest monthly expense among his seven categories in the area.
San Francisco wasn’t the only city where monthly housing costs were higher than other expenses. In Stamford-Norwalk, Conn., housing for a family of two adults and two children costs her $2,563, the highest monthly expense of his seven categories focused on by EPI.
In other metropolitan areas, child care was considered the highest cost. For example, in Nassau-Suffolk, New York, child care was the largest monthly expense of seven categories.
People may find it difficult to purchase certain items. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said in a recent interview on 60 Minutes that “when you look at basic necessities like bread and milk, prices are much higher than they were before the pandemic.”
“I think that’s a big reason why people are relatively dissatisfied with an otherwise pretty good economy,” Powell said.
Parents also need to think about the cost and type of child care they need. For some people, child care is a huge expense and can be more expensive than other expenses.
“It’s about $2,000 more than my mortgage,” Paige Connell, a mother of four, previously told Business Insider. “So this is a significant amount of money for us. It’s definitely what we’re paying the most money for.”
