Nasdaq sinks 2% at open as hot inflation data drives rate-cut jitters
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 98.21 points, or 0.25%, at the open to 38,699.17.
The S&P 500 opened lower by 53.90 points, or 1.07%, at 4,967.94, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 343.67 points, or 2.16%, to 15,598.88 at the opening bell.

Morgan Stanley hikes Brent forecasts on balanced oil market view
“Recent inventory declines suggest the oil market has been tighter than we initially expected,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a note dated Monday.
The bank expects Brent to average $82.50 per barrel in the first and second quarters of this year, compared with $80 and $77.50 previously. It raised forecasts for the last two quarters to $80 per barrel.

OPEC sticks to oil demand view, sees better economic growth
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, in a monthly report, said world oil demand will rise by 2.25 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024 and by 1.85 million bpd in 2025. Both forecasts were unchanged from last month.

The short-term trend of Nifty remains choppy with alternative candle formations like bull and bear. A sustainable move above the immediate resistance of 21800-21850 levels could open sharp upside towards another resistance of 22000-22100 levels in the near term, said Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities.

Rupee settles flat at 83 against US dollar
The rupee settled flat at 83 against the US dollar on Tuesday, as the support from a rally in domestic equities was negated by a strong greenback overseas and rising crude oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 83 against the dollar, and touched an intraday high of 82.98 and a low of 83.02.
The domestic market largely recovered from yesterday’s losses, driven by gains in the banking sector. Improved sentiment stemmed from a decline in domestic inflation, which is expected to boost rural demand. Despite this, broader markets continued to underperform compared to frontline indices due to high valuations. However, investors remained cautious ahead of U.S. inflation data, anticipating a moderation, pivotal for the Fed’s interest rate trajectory.

Oil prices drift up with focus on Middle East
Brent futures rose 30 cents to $82.30 a barrel as of 0924 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 31 cents to $77.23 a barrel.
Oil prices were near flat in Monday’s trade, after gaining 6% last week.

In yesterday’s trading, the Nifty faced substantial selling pressure despite a higher open, signalling bearish sentiment. Sellers remained assertive at lower levels, overshadowing positive aspects like FIIs buying Rs. 127 crore and DIIs Rs. 1722 crore. Technically, Nifty’s major support is at 21517, with hurdles at 21951. Options data indicates a 21500-22500 trading range, highlighting 22000 as a crucial resistance and 21000 as a significant support. Caution is advised until Nifty surpasses 21951 hurdles. The Volatility Index surged to 16.06. India’s CPI inflation eased to 5.1% in January. Caution is advised before US CPI data at 7 PM IST. Q3 earnings include BOSCH, BHEL, SIEMENS, ZEE ENTERTAINMENT, among others. Preferred trades: Buy Nifty (21616) with targets at 21807/22011, and Bank Nifty (44882) if above 45749 with targets at 46181/46893. Bullish on COFORGE, SIEMENS, and LTTS intraday with an inter-week perspective.
