United World Wrestling (UWW), the world governing body for professional wrestling, immediately lifted the suspension from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday. WFI had been suspended by the UWW since August 23 last year for not holding elections. The WFI elections were finally held on December 21, with the Sanjay Singh-led committee winning 13 of the 15 contested positions.
“The UWW Disciplinary Council has determined that there are sufficient grounds to impose an interim suspension on the athlete, as the situation within the federation has continued for at least six months,” the UWW statement said.
“The UWW Secretariat met on February 9 to consider, among other things, the suspension, and after considering all factors and information, decided to lift the suspension.”
However, the UWW asked the WFI to reconvene the athletes’ committee elections before July 1.
“Candidates for this committee must be active athletes or athletes who have retired within the last four years. Voters are athletes only. These elections are held at the Trials or Senior National Championships where this administration takes place. will take place in between,” UWW said.
“WFI must immediately provide UWW with written guarantees that all wrestlers will be able to participate without discrimination in all WFI events, especially the trials of the Olympic Games and other major national and international events. This prohibition against discrimination includes three things:” Athletes protested against allegations of misconduct by the former president. ”
The WFI currently remains suspended by the sports ministry, with the sport being managed by a trio of Indian martial arts association president Bhupender Singh Bajwa, former hockey Olympian MM Somaya and former international shuttler Manjusha Kanwar. It is managed by a special committee consisting of members.
The ad-hoc group held its senior national championship in Jaipur for the first time in a year earlier this month (February 2-5), while the Sanjay Singh-led group held its own national championship last month (January 29-31) . Last week, the special committee announced the schedule for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers and Asian Championships selection exams.
“We will wait for instructions from the IOA and the sports ministry,” Bajwa said.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Singh said that he will soon announce the new schedule for the Olympic qualifiers. “This is a positive step for the Indian wrestling industry. We will soon announce the schedule for the Olympic qualifying trials,” he said.
“All the wrestlers who participated in Jaipur Nationals will also be given an opportunity to appear in all the trials. There will be no bias against any wrestler,” Singh added.
The WFI has been suspended by the Ministry of Sports since December 24 for “blatant disregard of established legal and procedural norms, in violation of both the WFI’s constitutional provisions and the National Sports Development Code” continues to receive.
“We have always maintained that we are ready for dialogue with the government. We hope this will also pave the way for dialogue with the sports ministry,” Singh added.
This decision means that Indian wrestlers will be able to compete under the Indian flag in upcoming UWW events. Following the suspension, Indian wrestlers had to compete under the UWW flag.
So far, only Antim Panghal (53kg) has secured a spot for this year’s Paris Olympics. As many as 17 Olympic spots will be given to Indian wrestlers during the Asian Olympic Qualifications (April 19-21) and Olympic World Qualifications (May 9-12).
