The Russian leader gave his assessment of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in an interview with state TV station Russia 1 on Wednesday.
“Biden, he’s a more experienced, more predictable, old-school politician,” Putin told Russia-1 host Pavel Zarubin, according to a translation shared by The Associated Press.
“But we will work with American leaders that the American people trust,” Putin added.
The Russian president’s comments may come as a surprise to some, given Biden’s staunch opposition to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Under the Biden administration, the United States has provided more than $44 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. Biden also urged U.S. allies to provide aid to Ukraine.
By comparison, Trump has praised Putin, but his own administration has been plagued by allegations of Russian election interference.
When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the former president called Putin’s actions “genius” and “brilliant.” And in July, President Trump touted his relationship with President Putin at a rally in South Carolina.
“As Putin said, ‘You’re the most vicious president in history. No president has ever done this to me.’ And yet I got along with him. Isn’t that great? ” Trump told rally attendees.
Biden and Trump still have to campaign for the 2024 presidential election, but Putin is almost certain to secure re-election.
President Putin, who has been in power since 2000, will seek a fifth term in office when Russia heads to the polls in March.
Representatives for Biden and Trump did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside normal business hours.
