A state-of-the-art airship floats above a vast toxic dust cloud, blanketing an ecologically devastated Earth. That’s what most people notice when they first watch Forever Skies. And while this makes for an interesting and unique premise to explore, it’s one inspired by some pretty dystopian real-world situations.
Learn about the inspiration behind this first-person post-apocalyptic survival game coming to PS5 this year.
Our team comes from all over the world, but the majority are based in Poland. For decades, our country has been notorious for poor air quality, especially during the winter. Iconic Polish cities such as Krakow and Wroclaw are often ranked alongside megacities such as Beijing, Delhi and Lahore. But these are large cities where more than 10 million people live, and in some cases more than 20 million people. Despite the population of Krakow and Wrocław not exceeding 700,000 people, public alerts are regularly issued to stay indoors due to current air pollution levels.
Some studies even suggest that people need to go 100 meters above cities to breathe clean, unpolluted air. And so we found the first spark of inspiration that began the design of our entire world.
We envisioned a scenario in which humanity confronts an irreversible, self-induced ecological catastrophe by building skyscrapers towering above toxic dust clouds in a last-ditch effort to survive. However, this only delayed the inevitable collapse of society. The story of Forever Skies begins decades later, when a select group of humans who escaped into orbit send a research team to Earth to rediscover the world.
At your side is a high-tech airship that you can pilot, upgrade, and fully customize. In a world where land is no longer safe, this floating base will be your home, your lifeline, and your greatest tool for survival.
You’ll have to scavenge supplies and resources, use science to research new tools and equipment, and eventually descend beneath the toxic dust to complete your research mission. However, nature has mutated and evolved significantly under these harsh conditions and is no longer welcoming to humans.
Because the settings take care of themselves, we don’t push too many environmental messages in-game. The consequences of humanity’s actions have been shown to you and now you have to survive in this environment. And that’s what we always wanted to do. Not preaching, just providing a space for people to think about this important topic. Forever Skies will make its console debut in 2024 exclusively on PlayStation 5, and will be playable in single player or co-op for up to four players. Thank you for reading.
