A Netflix series exploring the history and influence of Black professionals in the beauty industry features a pioneer and member of a North Texas family with three generations of innovators in the hair industry.
Business owner Autumn Yarbrough hosted a special screening of "The Black Beauty Effect" in Dallas on February 15.
The third episode of the series features a section about her grandfather, Comer Cotrell Jr. He founded Pro-line International, which made iconic products including the Jheri Curl. Yarbrough's parents helped create the "Just for Me" relaxer system, And now Yarbrough is making history with her textured hair wellness company, NU Standard Beauty.
She spoke on NBC 5 about the importance of showing the series during Black History Month.
“It’s very exciting to have these conversations to show the successes we’ve had in the past and what we’re still doing today, but also to show that we have unfinished business, especially in the beauty industry. There’s unfinished business, and we as Black founders,” Yarbrough said.
Yarbrough said she would like to see more diversity in the people involved in beauty product research and development.
“Black Beauty Effect” is available on Netflix.
Comcast NBCUniversal has partnered with FaceForward Productions to release the series exclusively on Black Experience on the Xfinity channel in fall 2022.
All this month, NBC 5 is discovering Black Heritage and featuring stories of Black entrepreneurs and innovators.
