Is it already time to start thinking about the Yampa River and spring/summer recreation? If you’re a rafter, you’ve already applied for permits and probably know how lucky or not you are this year. It may be a little early for many of us to shift our focus away from snowsports, but if you’re considering a stream restoration or infrastructure project this year, it’s time to start thinking about financing.
As it has for the past four years, the Yampa River Foundation is accepting project applications starting February 19th and will provide $210,000 to local organizations working to protect water supplies, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities for people. We plan to distribute just over a dollar. We are next to the river. Projects that address these issues are essential to strengthening water security for Yampa Valley communities, agriculture, the economy, and the natural environment.
Grants from the River Fund can be used for three types of projects: water leases from reservoirs, river restoration activities, and infrastructure improvements. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, public districts and irrigation utilities, mutual ditch companies, homeowners associations and nonprofit organizations. Private landowners with project ideas are encouraged to partner with one of these organizations. The application period ends on April 1st.
Starting this year, applicants will be required to have a 15-minute consultation with Yampa River Fund Manager Mike Robertson to ensure they qualify for funding and that their application is on the right track. It is being
