ChatGPT seems a little unstable.
OpenAI’s chatbot started responding to a flood of unintelligible questions on Tuesday, leaving some users wondering what was going on.
Sean McGuire, a senior associate at global architecture firm Gensler, shared a screenshot of ChatGPT’s X responding to him in unintelligible “Spanglish.”
“Sometimes, in the creative process that keeps Tangled Spanglish vibrant, the Tecla gears can get a little fickle. Thank you for your understanding. I’ll make sure you stay,” ChatGPT wrote.
Then it became even more nonsense. “Are you happy when your ticking teeth spin grape teeth over something like head and sea jelly?” followed by a reference to jazz pianist Bill Evans, “Enjoy listening. Please!” was repeated. Nonstop.

Another user asked ChatGPT about the differences in mattresses in Asian countries. simply could not cope.
One user who shared an interaction with ChatGPT on Reddit said GPT-4 “just went into full hallucination mode,” and that nothing this serious had actually happened since “the early days of GPT-3.” He said no.
OpenAI acknowledges this issue. Its status dashboard first announced on Tuesday that it was “investigating reports of unexpected responses from ChatGPT.”
It later updated that the issue had been identified and is being monitored, and a further update Wednesday afternoon indicated all systems were operating normally.
It’s an embarrassing moment for the company, which is considered a leader in the artificial intelligence revolution and has received billions of dollars in investment from Microsoft. It also induces companies to pay to use more advanced versions of their AI.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ChatGPT issue.
That doesn’t stop people from speculating about the cause of the problem.
Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University and an expert on AI, launched a survey about X, asking users what they thought was the cause. Some thought OpenAI had been hacked, while others thought a hardware issue could be the culprit.
Why is ChatGPT behaving so strangely?

Most respondents guessed that “the weights are broken.” Weights are a fundamental part of AI models and help provide the predictive output that tools like ChatGPT provide to users.
Would this be a problem if OpenAI were more transparent about how its models operate and the data used to train them? Marcus wrote in a post on Substack that this situation is a necessity for less opaque technology. He suggested it was a reminder that sex is “of paramount importance.”
