GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Vandals are targeting the World of Winter Festival art installation in downtown Grand Rapids.

“When the climbers climbed, two of the light fixtures inside the cube broke. This and the photo above show one of the lights not working completely,” says the lighting artist from Rockford. , Marcus explained.


Climbing the Four Directions art installation wasn’t the only act of vandalism.
“When I came here to see you today, the installation was turned off. Turns out someone had unplugged it…it had been unplugged by people multiple times,” Marcus said. he said.
Precautions are being taken to protect the artwork, which took more than 200 hours and hundreds of dollars to create.
“We made a sign to hide it. They broke the sign, turned it over, and you could see the cube there was missing a speaker. I mean, actually someone broke the speakers and took them away,” Marcus said.
World of Winter draws thousands of people to downtown Grand Rapids each year. Artists spend hours presenting their art for people to admire.
“It’s a shame that they won’t be able to enjoy all of the art that we put into it,” Marcus said.
He says it’s a small group of people who are holding back the enjoyment of art.
“Even the proportions could impact a lot of people who come here to see these art installations and it’s not working when they’re coming here to see it. It’s possible,” Marcus said.
The festival’s organizer, Grand Rapids Inc., is aware of the vandalism issue.
“They want to make sure artists are respected, but there’s really only so much we can do,” Marcus said.
This is a place where the community can appreciate art without intervention.
“I just hope people enjoy the art and look at it. Stay away from the art because you can not only damage the art, but you can also damage yourself,” Marcus said. said.
He said the best way to make large-scale immersive art installations interactive is to take pictures.
“We want you to post a selfie. We designed it as an opportunity to take some really cool photos that you can’t get anywhere else,” Marcus said.
The World of Winter Festival ends on March 10th.
