houston, texas – It’s rodeo time in Houston!
The official kickoff for Houston’s nearly month-long rodeo event is underway. More than 250 of his chefs will compete in his 2024 World Championship BBQ Cook-Off at NRG Park.
Every year, more than 200,000 people gather in spectacular tents dotting the parking lot to feast on some of the world’s best barbecue for both their eyes and their bellies.
“This is a 20-day rodeo, three days of some of the best barbecue and excitement and people watching you’ve ever seen in your life,” said Stephen Brown of Lonesome Dove Cookers. “It’s pure excitement. People don’t come from all over America. They’ve never seen anything like this. This is amazing.”
From ribs to brisket and everything else that ends up on the plate, the chefs carefully rotate the plates to suit the judges’ palettes.
They will have three days starting Thursday to perfect their best work.
Last year, the judges at Lonesome Dove Cookers awarded the group first place in the open category.
It’s great because you’ve worked all year to get to this point and that’s what you want. Yes, this is a chef’s chef,” said Robert Vasquez, head chef at Lonesome Dove Cookers.
Their tents are just a few of the more than 250 tents that offer specialty meats for the hungry.
“I got brisket, turkey breast, pork belly, ribs, potatoes and creamed corn,” he said.
“Everyone’s trying to show what they can cook. They dig something out of the back and say, ‘Oh, look at this,'” Brown added.
The World Championship Barbecue Cook-Off continues through Saturday.
The cooks will then knock down tents and move on to make way for the Houston Rodeo, which begins on February 27th.
