SAN DIEGO – A U.S. Navy veteran with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and a master’s degree in health administration, Angel Mason Broadus’ path to a career in marketing was anything but easy.

After spending much of his time working in the medical technology/healthcare field, Broadus has built a successful career as the founder, president, and CEO of Puzzle Piece Marketing in San Diego.

Puzzle Pieces Marketing (PPM) is a Black-owned, women-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, and veteran-owned marketing agency specializing in nonprofits and mission-driven businesses.

Owned and operated by Angel Mason Broadus and his wife Kristine Mason Broadus, PPM provides creative and colorful branding, website design and development, graphic design, copywriting and messaging, SEO and social media services.

Since its founding in 2009, the agency has been dedicated to amplifying the voice and impact of mission-driven, cause-based nonprofit organizations that create tangible positive change in their communities.

PPM started completely bootstrapped and remains self-funded, with 20% to 25% year-over-year growth since 2020.

The road to independence in the consulting business

Prior to joining PPM, Angel Mason Broadus led diagnostic market expansion efforts at ResMed Inc., which established itself as the world’s leading manufacturer of sleep apnea treatment and diagnostic medical devices. She also served as global marketing and senior product manager at leading medical device manufacturers Smiths Medical and Cardinal Health.

Broadus started her own business in 2009 after being laid off from her last corporate marketing role.

While looking for her next job, she said the thought of returning to a corporate environment where she might face the same vulnerabilities made her think seriously about her next steps.

She debated whether it was the right decision to jump back into another corporate marketing role so quickly.

“I slowed down a bit and over the next few weeks spoke with mentors, colleagues, and friends and ultimately decided that the path I wanted to take was to start my own consulting business,” she said. Ta.

Despite his initial doubts, Mr. Broadus promised to give him a chance for six months. Broadus said PPM has grown beyond initial expectations, defied adversity, and continues to be a resilient player in the industry with a “small but mighty” team of six employees. It is said that there is.

Broadus is responsible for managing team members responsible for marketing strategy, graphic design and branding, and messaging and copywriting projects.

build business together

She was joined at PPM in 2015 by Christine Mason Broadus, who held the role of Vice President and Head of Business Development at the company. Kristine Mason Broadus oversees her PPM team responsible for digital marketing, social media, search engine optimization, and website development projects.

Before joining PPM, Christine Mason Broadus worked as a tutor for years, went back to school, and eventually became a respiratory therapist specializing in pediatric and neonatal intensive care. I met my future wife while working there.

After getting married, they decided that starting a business together was the best path forward for their common future. Christine Mason Broadus left RT after earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and aiming to become a social worker.

Broadus said that as a Black/LGBTQ/woman-owned company, PPM faces unique challenges.

“We have encountered stereotypes and biases that impact how potential clients, partners and communities perceive our capabilities and support our work,” she said. I did. “Diverse voices and perspectives are not always adequately represented, so more efforts are needed to achieve visibility and representation.”

They acknowledge that there is an added layer of complexity because the couple owns the company.

“Balancing the demands of running a business and managing relationships poses unique challenges in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, but this is especially true for minority-owned businesses,” said Angel Mason Broadus. It’s not limited to.” “Finding the right balance is key to personal well-being and critical to business success.”

embrace your uniqueness

Despite these challenges, they can overcome problems by leveraging their strengths, fostering a supportive work culture, achieving great results, and seeking out and joining networks and organizations that support diversity and inclusion. I have successfully survived and overcome it.

By embracing uniqueness, PPM not only challenged stereotypes, but also forged meaningful connections and proved that diversity and inclusion are essential to success.

In the spirit of giving back, Angel Mason Broadus also serves as past board chair, current board member, and chair of the DEI and Marketing Committee of the North County Charitable Council.

She is also a member of the United Way of San Diego County Women United Steering Committee and Marketing Committee and the Moonlight Cultural Foundation DEI Committee.

“My parents taught me that I’m not on this earth for nothing,” she said. “The price you pay is giving back and contributing to your community. They taught me the value of volunteering from a young age.”

PPM also offers four scholarships annually to financially support minority and LGBTQ+ high school graduates.
