HANCOCK — The Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Kellogg Youth Fund’s spring 2024 scholarship and grant application period is scheduled to end March 16.
When the Kellogg Youth Foundation donated $500,000 to establish the fund, it challenged the Keweenaw Community Foundation to be run by and for the youth of Houghton and Keweenaw counties. Because grant applications come from nonprofit organizations that work directly with youth, YAC directors are involved in important decision-making.
Once the application period ends, YAC members will review the applications and make recommendations to the KCF Board regarding which applications should be funded. This was a topic discussed at the February regular meeting of KCF’s Youth Advisory Committee on Wednesday.
Alecia Oakley, YAC president and Houghton High School senior, said $13,000 is available for the spring grant round. She explained the selection process to new YAC board members who had not participated in previous grant rounds.
“For those who have not come in to receive a grant in the past, we usually have a printout of the grant application form. We also usually have a printout of the grant application form, and we usually include the organization, the amount requested (funding), and I also have a spreadsheet of what I’m going to use, and that’s why.” Alecia said. “We will consider them and discuss them.”
Alethea explained that the next step in the process is to determine whether a particular application stands out. Does the City Council want to fully fund it? Do they have the money to fully fund it? Next, we will discuss each in detail.
Alesia said that after the deadline, the YAC will meet on March 20 to review applications, hold discussions and make an initial decision. A follow-up meeting on March 27 will finalize the recommendations from the March 20 meeting. The KCF Board will then record its recommendations.
KCF Program Manager Sarah Fletcher, who was present at the meeting, told the YAC board that based on YAC’s recommendations, a total of $57,000 will be awarded to projects and initiatives benefiting youth in Houghton and Keweenaw counties starting in fall 2022. He said 32 grants have been awarded. Some organizations also ask YAC to volunteer support for their events.
“Certainly, if you find something you can fund and decide you really need help with that, we will get in touch.” Fletcher said.
For example, one organization she knows to call for help is the Western UP Pollution Center Network, which works with the Michigan Technological University Science and Environmental Support Center.
CSEO works with stakeholders locally, statewide, and throughout the Upper Great Lakes region to promote community assistance programs, K-12 education programs, and teacher professional development, and to adapt the parameters of classroom walls to the forest canopy. It has expanded to the lakeside.
“The project itself is to install air censorship equipment around western UP.” Fletcher said: “And he wants young people to help set them up.”
The data will be used in a variety of science projects at local schools.
Alethea commented on YAC’s community involvement. She told new members that the council’s mission is to bridge the gap between Houghton County and Keweenaw County communities by engaging youth in philanthropy while developing youth leadership skills.
“It’s like we’re all working together to create a service project here.” Alecia said.“It’s great to be involved in the community.”
Participation, she said, also includes volunteering and finding ways to support the local community.
“Much of that is due to our grants and will be implemented as soon as all grants are completed.” she said.
