ALBANY — Maple Grove senior Matt Trim competes with friend, opponent and fellow Section VI state qualifier Chautauqua Lake prior to his match at MVP Arena in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Division 2 Wrestling Championships. /Westfield/Panama/I spent a week training with junior climber Mason Marling. Albany.

“We wrestled in practice all week,” Trim said. “Neither of us thought we would have a chance to be on the podium, and on top again. We thought we might make it a goal.”

Trim, whose main goal was to improve on last year’s eighth-place finish, surprised even himself by defeating the top seed in the 215-pound weight class with a surprise victory and earning a spot in the finals against Marling.

Trim had fought Marling in finals seven times before Saturday, but this match was the most important of his career. And, just like in the regional qualifying two weeks ago, this time Trim won by a landslide decision of 11-0.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Trim said of winning the state title. “My goal was always to beat my brother, who came in fifth place his senior year. Last year he took eighth place. I knew I had to be better than him this year. …Finals , it felt like my divisional finals again. I’ve wrestled Mason in the finals eight times so far. It’s a battle every time. I love wrestling with him.”

After a scoreless first period, the fifth-seeded Trim started to make a move in the second period. He cornered Marling with two near falls and almost ended the round with a pin, just like in the sectional final, but the junior from Westfield fought his way through the third period.

“One game at a time,” Maple Grove head coach Josh Reed said of Trim and Mullin. “Nothing is ever taken for granted. These two are friends off the mat, and I respect that they fight every time they get on the mat. They temporarily forget their friendship, fight, and fight off the mat. , we can give each other a big hug and be proud of each other.”

Trim can walk away from his career representing the Red Dragons as a state champion after reaching the top of the podium with a 45-2 record in his senior season.

“It means the world,” Reed said of Trim becoming state champion. “It means absolutely everything. I’m so excited about his work ethic. I always tell him, no one works harder than you. I look at what he’s accomplished. He actually believed in himself and had no doubts and went there and did it. We’re proud of him.”

Although Marling fell short of first place, the junior made a shock in the standings, finishing well above the billed 6th seed. And more importantly, he has one more year to work his way back up to an even better ranking.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Climbers head coach Ken Lowe said of Marling’s tournament, “He may not always agree with his coaches, but he really did a great job this weekend. I stayed focused,” he said. “He stuck to the plan and listened to the techniques we threw at him. I don’t think a lot of people expected it, but he had a great tournament. He got caught and hit the bar in the final, which changed the course of the match, but I think he was in the match anyway. He had a great tournament, so that gives him confidence moving forward. I think it will be helpful.”

Just before the Trim vs. Marling showdown, Southwestern sophomore Tavio Hose took to the mat looking for his second state title after winning last year’s 172-pound championship.

Hose faced a familiar opponent in the finals, against Grayson Meek of Round 8 Cold Spring Harbor, whom he defeated in this year’s and last year’s finals.

But that wasn’t the case Saturday night, as Tabio couldn’t escape Meek’s clutches.

“Honestly, I thought some of the calls were not in our favor, but to use politically correct terminology,” Southwestern head coach John Bogan said. “I can’t blame you for that, but sometimes you’re at the mercy of the referee’s decisions. You don’t just ride, you have to aim to score when you’re on top. Sometimes you don’t play your best game. But we have two wins against Meek, one in the finals last year and one this year at Eastern States. Today is his day and he played a good game. did.”

Like Hose’s opponent in the semifinals, Meek opened the fight with a 2-0 takedown and hung on to Hose like his life depended on it. Meek didn’t let him get away once in his first two periods, forcing Hose out of bounds just when it looked like he was breaking through.

In the end, Meek was given a two-point penalty for stalling on his third attempt, allowing him to escape, but Hose was unable to get a takedown and fell short of a comeback with a 5-3 decision.

“This was a great day for the kids,” Vaughan added of the Horses and the rest of the Trojans in the state. “The overall expectations were not what we wanted today, but I think you have to take a step back and look at the big picture that each of the kids that were here had a great season. It’s a tough season because there are only a handful of kids in this entire state who finish well. It’s tough right now, but when you take the time to look back, all of these kids had a phenomenal year. For Carmine and Tavio, it’s another effort to build on great careers, and they’re both sophomores.”
