There are 18 finalists in six categories for the 2024 World Car of the Year award, of which only one is American-made. No pressure, Ford Bronco.
A jury of 98 journalists from 30 countries will award the awards. They plan to announce the winner at next month’s New York International Auto Show.
BMW led all car manufacturers, with four finalists. Volvo scored 3 points. Kia Motors, Mercedes, and China’s BYD each have two vehicles. Several of the finalists have never been sold in the United States, including two of his BYD models and the Lexus LBX subcompact SUV.
The center of the automobile world is shifting to China.
Last year, BYD overtook Tesla to become the world’s top electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer. The company is one of several Chinese automakers building or considering building factories in Mexico. Chinese cars have become big business in Mexico, outpacing US cars south of the border starting in 2022.
American manufacturing organizations recently sounded the alarm about Chinese cars in the U.S., saying that cars made in Mexico by Chinese-owned manufacturers could qualify for a $7,500 federal EV tax credit, which would reduce American manufacturing. Warned that it could cause damage.
