The World Indoor Track and Field Championships opened on Friday as Christian Coleman defeated Noah Lyles and Ryan Crowther completed his gold medal bid.
Coleman won the 60-meter dash in Glasgow, Scotland, by three-hundredths of a second in 6.41 seconds over Lyles, reversing a one-two finish at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago.
Coleman, who set a world record in the 60-meter dash in 2018 with a time of 6.34 seconds, is the best starter in the world, but he was completely defeated by Lyles at nationals. Coleman got out quickly again Friday and Lyles gave chase but he couldn’t catch him.
This summer, Coleman will aim to become the first person to win a world indoor 60m title and an Olympic 100m title in the same year.
The World Indoor Track and Field Championships will be broadcast on NBC Sports and Peacock.
In 2023, Lyles swept the gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at the World Outdoor Championships.
Coleman placed fifth in the 100m final and four weeks later beat Lyles in the Diamond League finals in 9.83 seconds, matching Lyles’ winning time at the World Championships.
To qualify for Paris in the 100 meters, Coleman and Lyles must finish in the top three at the Olympic Trials in June.
Also on Friday, Krauser won her first world indoor title, winning the world shot put gold medal.
The 31-year-old American won with a throw of 22.77 meters. His indoor world record is 22.82 seconds. His outdoor world record is 23.56 seconds.
He owns the top five outdoor throws and top five indoor throws of all time.
Krauser is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, two-time reigning world outdoor champion, and Diamond League season champion.
Krauser and former pole vaulter Stacey Dragira are the only Americans to win the indoor and outdoor Olympic world titles and to break indoor and outdoor world records in a single track and field event.
The World Indoor Games debuted in 1985 and excludes some events included in the Olympic program, including most of the sprints.
This summer, Krauser could become the first person to win a third Olympic shot put gold medal.
American Chase Jackson (née Ely) won bronze in the women’s shot put after winning outdoor world titles the past two summers. Last year’s outdoor silver medalist, Sarah Mitton of Canada, won with a throw of 20.22 meters.
World Indoors continues on Saturday, and so do the live shows. peacockwill feature Olympic pole vault gold medalist Katie Moon and 60m hurdles world record holder Grant Holloway.
