– Affordability is a top priority for most Americans as they prepare to book spring and summer travel. That’s according to a recent Hopper survey on the best ways to save on your upcoming trip. As part of Yahoo Finance’s Travel Guide 2024 Industry Insights, we’re joined by Yahoo Finance’s Kerry Hannon. So Kelly, what are your big tips for people to save money?
Kelly Hannon: Oh, I definitely want to go right now. But the best tip is to plan ahead. So if you can book a flight a month in advance, two months in advance is better. But now we are talking about summer vacation there. As for hotels, there aren’t really any great deals at the moment, but from the 10th onwards, anywhere for about two weeks is a good deal. However, it is very important to think when traveling.
So flights tend to be cheaper mid-week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or back on Mondays rather than weekends. So these are just some of the important things to consider when planning. Second, try to travel during off-peak hours if possible. So, I might not go there now that I’m on spring break. But you go in May or between Labor Day and just before Thanksgiving. That shoulder period.
For example, there are great deals like I want to go to St. Barts. Believe me, if you want to go to St. Barts at the end of October. You can find villas for a quarter of his price in high season. You may also have access to free rental cars at the same time. So think about those things. Third, use a price tracker. These are great and most major travel apps have them. Hopper has her Google Flights.
So if you know where you want to go and a rough date, enter it there. Because even if you say, “Oh, the fares here are getting higher the closer you get here,” there’s liquidity here. That’s why we warn you when there’s a sharp drop. And if there is a drop, by all means buy. Next, pack light. United Airlines and American Airlines have both increased their checked baggage fees, so bring your own baggage.
And if you don’t have a credit card or something, it now costs like $40 to check a bag. Seriously, pack light so you don’t have to wait if your bag gets lost. And the last thing to think about is credit card points. I think we’ll look into this further. A great way to find discounts and loyalty rewards programs on hotels and other products.
– Kelly, I love your buy-on-the-moment advice and it applies perfectly to our coverage here at Yahoo Finance. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Have a great weekend! Thank you very much.
